Roofing in Pueblo West, Colorado.
Pueblo West is roughly one-acre lots on open mesa at about 4,900 feet, with almost nothing to break the wind. Wind lifts ridge caps and seal strips before the hail arrives, and the shop or RV garage gets hit as hard as the house. Since 1 January 2026, permits run through the Pueblo County Building Division.
Alta Roofing serves Pueblo West and the unincorporated communities west of Pueblo. This is exposed, open mesa country on roughly one-acre lots with very little mature tree cover, so sustained wind is the dominant factor in how roofs fail here. Since 1 January 2026 permits for Pueblo West have been handled by the Pueblo County Building Division rather than the Pueblo Regional Building Department, and we pull them through the right authority.
Wind first, hail second.
Pueblo West sits on open mesa with no terrain and very little vegetation to break the wind. Roofs here take sustained load rather than occasional gusts, and the failure pattern reflects it: it starts at the rakes and the ridge, where the pressure differential is highest, and works inward. Ridge caps lift, the seal strip on the windward field lets go, and then a subsequent storm gets underneath.
The hail is the same Pueblo County hail that put a July 2009 storm on the Rocky Mountain Insurance Association's list of Colorado's costliest. The difference out here is that by the time hail arrives, many roofs have already had their seal strips compromised by wind, which means more damage from a given storm than the same shingle would take in a sheltered street.

The outbuildings get left off the scope.
Pueblo West lots routinely carry a detached shop, an RV garage, a barn or a large storage building, and every one of them has a roof that the same storm hit. Those structures are covered on most homeowner policies as other structures, and they are among the most frequently omitted items on a carrier's first scope, because the adjuster wrote the estimate from the house. We inspect and photograph every structure on the property, not just the one you live in, and we put the detached buildings in the documentation from the start. Metal roofs on shops and barns need their own assessment too, because hail dents panels and damages the coating in ways that are easy to under-scope.

1980s to 2000s single-storey ranches
The bulk of Pueblo West. Long, simple roof planes on modest pitches, mostly asphalt shingle, mostly now at or past the age where wind exposure and hail together finish them. Long uninterrupted rakes are exactly where wind gets a start.
Detached shops, RV garages and barns
Almost a defining feature of the area. Frequently metal or lower-grade shingle, frequently not scoped by the first adjuster, and covered under the other structures part of most policies. We inspect and document all of them.
Newer builds on the outer lots
Recent construction toward the edges of the district, generally with better ventilation than the older stock but on the same exposed ground, which makes correct ridge and rake detailing just as important.
Your roof permit goes through the Pueblo County Building Division.
Permits for Pueblo West and the rest of unincorporated Pueblo County, including Colorado City, moved to the Pueblo County Building Division on 1 January 2026. It is a different authority from the Pueblo Regional Building Department that covers the City of Pueblo. If a contractor is not clear on which one applies to your address, that tells you how often they work out here.

Pueblo West roofing questions.
Yes, as standard. Detached structures are covered under the other structures section of most homeowner policies and they are one of the most commonly missed items on a first scope. We photograph every structure on the lot.
The Pueblo County Building Division, which took over building department functions in unincorporated Pueblo County, including Pueblo West and Colorado City, on 1 January 2026. That is a change from how it used to work, and we pull the permit through the right authority.
Because that is where wind pressure is highest, and out on the mesa it is sustained rather than gusty. Correct starter strip at the rakes, correct ridge cap fastening and the right shingle wind rating are what stop it. A roof that was installed without a proper starter course at the rakes will keep doing this.
Often, yes. On an exposed site with long roof planes, standing seam has real advantages in wind and a long service life, and it reaches Class 4. It costs more up front, so it depends on how long you plan to stay. We will quote both.
